Solution-treated and quenched Fe-25 at.% Co-9 at.% Mo-0.4 at.% Si-0.1 at.% C alloy shows remarkable increase in hardness during ageing at elevated temperatures. At the hardening peak, precipitation of semicoherent m-phase, (Co,Fe)7Mo6, has been proven by experiment. Systematic investigations of the microstructure and composition of precipitates suggest a close relation of m-phase formation to initial decomposition processes. Nucleation and growth simulations are used to elucidate the role of classical nucleation during the early stages of phase separation.
