Project Description: Using Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) we investigate the microstructure of materials from a scale of several microns down to atomic resolution. In Steel, Nickel and Aluminium alloys we investigate the microstructure as a function of different alloying compositions and heat treatments. Specifically we look for grains, precipitates and defects such as dislocations and characterise these in terms of their size, distribution and chemical constitution. Such a study helps us to understand how the microstructure changes as a function of different fabrication parameters. When we correlate this with material tests, such as micro-hardness, we can learn how the microstructure influences the macroscopic properties. This makes it possible to fabricate materials with specific physical properties and to optimise the material to whichever application it is intended.
